Volunteers wanted for a panel discussion at our next CTXWFS meeting.
Did you ever fantasize about giving a mini TED talk in front of a friendly group? What is your opinion on the fate of our civilization – are we headed for an inevitable collapse, or is our best yet to come?
In March of this year, there was a "NASA Sponsored Study" published that predicted the collapse of our civilization. (http://climateandcapitalism.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2014/03/Motesharrei-Human-and-Nature-Dynamics.pdf). This 27 page paper discussed some general concepts and history behind civilization collapse, followed by some interesting mathematical models of growth and decline. If you’re not interested in the math, the first part of the discussion is still interesting. Civilization collapse is a common theme discussed by many speakers. Earlier this week UT Journalism professor Robert Jensen gave a talk with a similar theme titled “Coping With the Cascading Crises of our World” ( video available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48qZGQfOv3c).
For our next CTXWFS meeting, we are once again going to give our members a chance to speak their minds and share their opinions with the rest of the group. We are going to offer a set of brief 5-10 minute presentations from volunteers on the theme of "the prospects for civilization collapse” in general, or the NASA study in particular. This will be followed by a group discussion which is bound to be very lively. If you’re interested in stepping out of your comfort zone and giving a short 5-10 minute talk on this, or if this is just something you have strong opinions on that you're willing to share, please send me an email and I’ll put you on the speaker’s list. (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Gathering will start at 6pm, with the presentation starting around 7pm. This is a dinner meeting, with a charge of $20 for members, and $25 for non-members to cover the cost of the dinner and group expenses.
